Pamlico County (/ ˈpæmlɪkoʊ / PAM-lik-oh) is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 12,276. [1] Its county seat is Bayboro. [2] Pamlico County is part of the New Bern, NC Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The Pamlico region of North Carolina is a peaceful coastal area known for its wide riverfront views, maritime history, and connection to the state's inland sounds and estuaries.

Beginning near calm waters of the Pamlico River, the byway journeys through some of North Carolina’s oldest and most historic towns and alongside some of the most important preserve lands in the state. Pamlico was the name of a Native American group that once lived in the area.

Pamlico, Algonquian-speaking Indians who lived along the Pamlico River in what is now Beaufort county, N.C., U.S., when first encountered by Europeans. These sedentary agriculturists were almost destroyed by smallpox in 1696, and in 1710 the 75 survivors lived in a single village.

The Pamlico terrace has been traced north through Virginia into Maryland. The upper surface of Pamlico beds forms a low, nearly level plain whose elevation above sea level nowhere exceeds 25 feet.
