It was formerly connected to the mainland via a sand and gravel bar. Charles Wilkes called the area Craven Peninsula when he mapped Puget Sound in 1841. Acanalwas carved through the spit in 1913 to shorten the distance between Oak Bay on the south and Port Townsend to the north.

Building abridgeacross theHoodCanalwas no small feat. The unpredictable weather of the Pacific Northwest and the depths of thecanalpresented unique challenges. Nevertheless, construction began in January of 1958, with thebridgeofficially opening on August 12, 1961.

SHINE — It was 30 years ago Friday that hurricane-force winds sank the west half of theHoodCanalBridge, and those who witnessed the aftermath of the catastrophe greeted it with disbelief, shock, fear and amazement. Coincidentally, the anniversary happens to be Friday the 13th.
